Is the toe/vamp and shaft all leather? If I scuff the toe, will it peel away to show man made mats or just show as scuffed leather?

I recently bought a pair of boots that I thought were leather, but found only the upper or shaft (around the calf) was leather and the foot and toe of the boot were man made. I wore them once and scuffed the toe and the "distressed leather" design peeled away to reveal a white compost type material. Needless to say I returned them immediately. I tend to scuff the toes of my shoes often and I will not keep a pair if they are going to peel away and look cheap.
