Toddler and childrens sizing on shoes can be so confusing. If you grandaughter wears a 8.5 or 9 you will need to purchase a the same size (8.5 or 9 D) in a childrens boot. A 1D would be for a 4-5 year old child. Here's a better breakdown. Toddlers (ages 0-2) sizes start at a 1 and go thru an 8. Childrens sizes (ages 3-6)start at 8.5, go up to 13 and start again at 1 and go thru 3. (when you look at our size options for a childs boot you will see a 1,2 or 3 first and then 8.5 thru 13. Please remember that the 1,2 or 3 are larger than the 8.5-13.) Youth sizes (ages 7 and up)begin at 3.5 and go up from there. Hope this helps with all the confusion.
